In the lobby upstairs You’ll find coffee and tea making facilities, a fridge and a microwave. There are also books and magazines to read.
You are welcome to use the sitting area in the breakfast room in the evenings, but the kitchen is for staff only. In summertime there are also outdoor sitting areas you are welcome to use. Villa Jokivarsi is a LGBTQ friendly house. We do not tolerate discrimination, all guests are equally warmly welcome regardless of sex, gender or colour. Internet There’s free wifi available in the whole property |
SustainabilityThe house itself as well as the hot water are heated by geothermal and solar energy. The house is also built to save energy by thick walls and air-tight windows. The bought electricity is produced with wind power, bioenergy and hydropower and even my car runs with ethanol.
Most of the furniture is either antique or slighly more modern vintage, only the beds and matresses are brand new. It goes without saying that we recycle the waste; organic waste I use in the garden myself. All detergents are biodegradable and/or have a Finnish or EU eco-label. I also choose a non-animal-tested option whenever one is available. We also donate yearly to either Luonnonperintösäätiö or John Nurminen Foundation to help protect and restore Finnish forests and the Baltic Sea. Safety
Each room is equipped with a fire alarm, and in case of alarm the hostess will be notified automaticly. Main exits are clearly marked with green signs and in emergency you can also exit each room through the window. There are instructions for emergency in each room, a portable fire extinguisher can be found in the lobby upstairs and fire blankets in sauna and kitchen. Unauthorized persons do not have access into the property. |
The story
For several years I had been wondering why Finland – and especially the Helsinki region – was lacking a small and cozy accommodation option. B&B, Gasthaus, Hotel Garni . the names vary, but the idea is the same. I surely wanted to put up one, if I had the place. In spring 2015 I found a fairly big lot with great location – and it happened to be only a stone’s through away from my grandparent’s former summer cottage in the 1950’s. Together with the architect we planned this slightly unusual house to serve both as a home to our family and a commercial b&b. This big stone house with classical style but modern amenities was built during 2016. In February 2017 Villa Jokivarsi and I were ready to welcome our first guests. |
